The Prince William County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is inviting the community to a free Candis King 1.5-Mile Sickle Cell Disease Awareness Memorial Walk and Blood Drive on Saturday, September 26, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Charles J. Colgan Sr. High School, 13833 Dumfries Road near Dale City. The event will feature the walk, free sickle cell trait screening, education about the disease, and an American Red Cross blood drive, with donations appreciated to support scholarships in Candis King’s honor and sickle cell research.

Candis Gabriella King, a Colgan High School student known for her involvement in choir and color guard, died in October 2025 at age 15 from complications of sickle cell disease. Her story helped inspire Virginia’s first-in-the-nation Queen Candis Sickle Cell Act, signed by Gov. Abigail Spanberger in June 2026 to improve training, awareness, and coordinated care.

Colgan High School mourns death of Delegate Candi King’s daughter

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. — Prince William County Public Schools confirmed Sunday that Candis King, a 10th-grade student at Colgan High School and daughter of Virginia Delegate Candi Mundon King, has died.

In a letter sent to Colgan families on Sunday, Principal Tim Healey informed parents of the student’s death. He said the school community would receive counseling and emotional support this week.

Forest Park High Earns National Green Flag for Environmental Leadership

The National Wildlife Federation and EcoSchools U.S. awarded Forest Park High School the Green Flag, making it the first school in Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) to receive this prestigious recognition. The award highlights the school’s commitment to sustainability education and promoting positive environmental change within the community.

For Ashley Tayon, the school’s sustainability coordinator, and her students, the Green Flag was the main goal for the year. “It was truly an honor to be part of the new sustainability movement within PWCS,” Tayon stated in a press release, adding that the achievement was a collaborative effort among students, staff, and community partners. Their initiatives included collecting data, developing action plans, and diverting 1,600 pounds of waste from landfills.
