On October 16, officers found two adults and two girls in a vehicle in Woodbridge, where suspected illegal drugs were accessible to the children. The adults were arrested and charged with child neglect and drug possession, while the children were treated at a hospital but were not injured.

On October 17, officers responded to a crash on Mapledale Avenue in Dale City where a Nissan Versa struck a pedestrian walking her dog, resulting in the pedestrian’s death. The driver remained at the scene and was uninjured, with charges pending as the investigation continues.

The race will be the kickoff event for Red Ribbon Week — which runs from Oct. 23 to Oct. 31 — a nationwide drug prevention and awareness initiative. Nationwide, Young Marines will begin a week of activities to prevent the use of drugs with National Family Partnership, the founders of Red Ribbon Week in 1985.

The 5K commemorates the death of Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, a former Drug Enforcement Administration agent who was killed in Mexico in 1985 in his quest to get drugs off America’s streets.

Fredericksburg

An industrial accident claimed the life of a Stafford County man on the morning of October 15, 2024. Douglas Contreras-Zuniga, 57, was fatally injured while working at Norfleet Quality LLC, a company known for providing premium mulch products and a longtime supplier to the U.S. Botanic Garden in Washington, D.C.

The Fredericksburg Police and Fire Departments responded to the accident at the company’s location on 103 Central Road after receiving a distress call at 7:40 a.m. Upon arrival, emergency personnel discovered that Contreras-Zuniga had sustained severe trauma to his right leg. Despite their efforts, paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.
