Chick-fil-A President and CEO Dan Cathy this week took a public stance against gay marriage and is slated to speak in Manassas later this year at an event promoted by the Prince William Chamber of Commerce.

MANASSAS, Va. — Chick-fil-A President and CEO Dan T. Cathy will come to Prince William County to speak about business. The announcement comes as some are crying foul over his recent comments about marriage, stating a union should only be between a man and woman.

Cathy said his Chick-fil-A company, a privately owned fast-food restaurant chain with its highest-grossing restaurant in Woodbridge, is “guilty as charged” when it comes to upholding the biblical definition of a family to include a man and woman.

Super Thrift Store Opens to Crowds

WOODBRIDGE, Va. — Better late than never. Woodbridge has a new thrift store that opened to fanfare Tuesday night.

Savers, a national chain of thrift stores with seven in the Washington area, held a preview event Tuesday night where shoppers were lined up to get inside the store before it officially opened Thursday morning.

Storms Leave Power Out, More on the Way

Another round of violent storms swept through the region late Thursday into early Friday morning causing more power outages.

At 5 a.m. Friday, 66 Dominion Virginia Power customers who live near Leesylsvania State Park in Woodbridge and four who live in the Brooke section of Stafford County, were without power. Eight Northern Virginia Electric Power customers in Prince William County were also without power.

Lemonade Popular in Occoquan This Weekend

OCCOQUAN, Va. — In Occoquan this weekend, visitors can mix lemonade, sunny weather, and a big dose of shopping to support local merchants.

The town will hold a Lemonade Yard Sale on Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The small shops will have yellow ribbons hanging on them, will offer discounts of up to 75 percent, and, of course, have plenty of lemonade, organizers said.

Germanna, UMW Have New Transfer Agreement

A new co-enrollment agreement will allow eligible students at Germanna to take a limited number of courses at UMW while they are still enrolled at the community college. A new direct transfer agreement will allow Germanna students to transfer into UMW’s liberal studies, or BLS, degree program, said UMW spokeswoman Marty Morrison.

A ceremony marking the new agreements will take place at the University’s Dodd Auditorium at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Sheriff Jett Donates $20,000 to Memorial

STAFFORD, Va. — With the pomp and circumstance normally reserved for a presidential campaign speech, Stafford County welcomed Virginia Gov. Robert F. McDonnell to its public safety center Wednesday.

Arriving about 9:30 a.m. in a black motorcade traveling on Va. 630, McDonnell was greeted by uniformed officers from the county’s sheriff and fire agencies. A large U.S. flag was draped overhead from two ladder trucks from the fire department marking the spot where McDonnell would sign new bills into law that offer new protections for public safety workers, as well as expand their investigative powers.

Crime Watch: Suicide Turns into Homicide Investigation

FROM POLICE REPORTS:

Murder Investigation – On July 17 at 3:45 a.m., police responded to the 18300 block of Old Triangle Rd in Triangle (22172) for an initial report of a suicide in progress. The caller, later identified as the accused, initially called police to report that the victim had stabbed herself while in a residence in the above area. The victim was transported to an area hospital were she died as a result of a stab wound to her chest. Upon further investigation, detectives learned that the victim had not committed suicide and that she and the accused, her husband, were involved in a verbal altercation which escalated physically. During the encounter, the accused allegedly stabbed the victim with a knife. Detectives from the Homicide Unit obtained a warrant against the accused who was arrested without incident the same day.
