QUANTICO, Va. — Something symbolic was missing from one of our community’s most recognized statues Monday.

The U.S. Flag was removed from the Iwo Jima statue outside Quantico Marine Corps Base. A replica of the original Iwo Jima statue that stands at Arlington National Cemetery, the sculpture stands outside the main entrance to the base and can prominently be seen by passersby on U.S. 1, Joplin and Fuller roads.

STAFFORD, Va. — You could call this scammer creative or shameful, just don’t call some Stafford residents easily fooled.

Five Stafford County residents told authorities they received a phone call from a Lt. Paul Stevens who said he worked at the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office. He told them there was a bench warrant out for their arrests because they failed to report for jury duty.

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. — The Virginia of Transportation (VDOT) has reduced the weight limit on the one-lane Aden Road bridge from six tons to four, due to further corrosion of the structurally deficient 132-year-old truss bridge owned by Norfolk Southern Railroad. VDOT bridge crews inspected the bridge Thursday, March 27 and posted new weight limit signs the following day.

“We want to make sure that any vehicles over four tons – such as fire trucks and school buses –are not using the bridge,” said Gary Runco, VDOT’s bridge engineer in northern Virginia. Until reconstruction begins next year, we are inspecting the bridge twice a month and are consulting with Norfolk Southern to determine if interim repairs can be made.”

STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. — Another arrest in the Stafford sheriff’s new war on heroin was made early Saturday but not before the suspect was hit with a taser weapon.

Investigators conducting surveillance of a home in Stafford County suspected of being a hot bed of narcotics sales saw a man leave the house at 2147 Sebastian Road just of Va. 218 in south Stafford in the late evening hours of Friday, March 28. The man got into his car and deputies stopped him on U.S. 17 in Stafford County.

DUMFRIES, Va. — Two mayoral candidates for the Dumfries Town Council have agreed to sit in the hot seat.

Current Mayor Jerry Foreman is seeking reelection and is running against Vice-Mayor Willie Toney. Both have agreed to be interviewed by the newly elected Dumfries Businesses Association (DBA) President Chris Caldwell. This is the first event to be organized by a changing DBA that is now charging for membership and vows to become a larger voice in town business affairs.
