The air quality outside today won’t be so great. It’s a code yellow day, according to the Washington Metropolitan Council of Governments, and that means the air quality is not as good as other days and can be harmful to highly sensitive groups of people.

Clean Air Partners for Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C. measures the air quality index on a scale that includes colors such as green, yellow, orange for moderate, red for unhealthy, and purple for very unhealthy. The organization urges those who might be sensitive to air pollution today to make fewer trips outdoors today and, if possible, link all errands together so they can be completed in one trip.

I’m not sure if my logic was flawed on this one or not, but I told him no, because although we’ve recently begun to pay our children for chore completion, he’d gotten assigned the job because he was underfoot, sighing loudly while I was making lunch. If you’re bored, I tell them, and you can’t find anything to do, I’ll find something for you.

I wound up my column last week by asking, “Who is going to step up to the plate?” I was talking about community maintenance; the art of tending neglected spaces. Let me share a few of the tools that volunteers find beneficial.

Often, the first step in community maintenance is simply determining who owns the property. Prince William County provides the County Mapper connecting you to lots of other data, too, like tax information, zoning, overlay districts and much more.
