Press Release

The MCPS Education Foundation is pleased to announce that it has awarded more than $74,000 to programs in Manassas City Public Schools (MCPS) this year. The Foundation’s Grants program encourages educators to identify and develop solutions to educational challenges.

Lisa Harlow, STEM Instructional Coach earned funding for a new program “Take a Closer Look”, which will provide each classroom at Haydon Elementary with a hand held microscope/camera and an iPad to view the images. “This will allow students to more closely examine the scientific world around them. From simple observations in Kindergarten to the study of plant reproduction in grade four, access to these microscopes and the ability to view and record the images will enhance our students understanding of the standards they are expected to master.”

Opinion

Before and since running for elected office, a politician that continually inspires me is President, Abraham Lincoln. In his short but concise Gettysburg Address, which is ten sentences and 170 words in length, Lincoln preached about his commitment to a “government of the people, by the people, for the people.”

While his speech is over 150 years old, the lessons Lincoln taught are just as relevant today. I urge all the men and women serving in elected office to heed Lincoln’s advice, no matter what political party they represent.

News

On Saturday afternoon, a call came in for a boat in distress at Willow Landing Marina, which is on Aquia Creek in eastern Stafford County. Two men were on board.

A flat-bottom boat had reportedly run aground in the low tide of the creek. That wouldn’t be as much of a problem had it not been for the high winds that were blowing on the sunny, 59-degree day. According to weather.com, the day’s wind speed was around 20 miles per hour, with gusts up to 33mph. The National Weather Service reported wind speed to be 23mph with gusts of 28mph.
