WOODBRIDGE — A total of 67 citizens gave impassioned pleas for and against the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) during the Prince William County Board of Supervisors meeting Tuesday.

Woodbridge Supervisor Frank Principi put the item on the agenda, urging his fellow Supervisors to declare support for a constitutional amendment introduced in the early 1970s that aimed to give equal rights to women. After hours of testimony from residents, Principi could not get a single one of the supervisors to second his motion.

WOODBRIDGE — (Press Release) The Prince William County Board of Supervisors announced Raul Torres as the new Executive Director of the Human Rights Office. Torres comes to Prince William County after 19 years as the Assistant County Manager for Arlington County overseeing human rights, EEO and ADA.

“Mr. Torres brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Prince William County,” said Corey Stewart, Chairman of the Prince William Board of County Supervisors. “As a community, we are committed to fairness and equality, and Mr. Torres will be a strong advocate for equality and fairness for the citizens of Prince William County.”

STAFFORD — (Press Release) Stafford County Fire and Rescue has hired Allen Baldwin to be its Assistant Chief of Operations. Baldwin is currently the Fire Chief of the Winchester, Va. Fire and Rescue Department.

HAYMARKET — Carried to Full Term, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping expectant mothers, will expand.  

The organization said its new program is geared toward helping low-income mothers get back on their feet. Founder Frances Robin said the goal is to break the cycle of poverty by adequately preparing expecting mothers for a life of independence and self-sufficiency.

STAFFORD COUNTY — The Thanksgiving holiday weekend turned deadly on the roads after two people died in a crash on Route 1.

The wreck occurred in the 3700 block of Jefferson Davis Highway, just north of Garrisonville Road at 11:06 a.m. when a 2002 Nissan Xterra that was traveling north on Route 1 when it crossed the center line and struck a southbound 1993 Jeep Cherokee. The Nissan was then struck by a northbound 2018 Ford Super Duty truck, said Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller.

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY — Prince William leaders kicked the can down the road Tuesday over a rezoning that would have cleared the way for 104 new homes near Manassas.

After nearly 100 people who came to the Board of Supervisors meeting to speak on the matter, Coles District Supervisor Marty Nohe motioned to defer the decision to January 22 to give more time to for the developer to address the concerns of the community. It passed with Occoquan Supervisor Ruth Anderson voting against.
