Predatory lending, imposing abusive terms and high interest rates on borrowers regardless of ability to pay, is a nagging problem in Virginia, the 36th Senate District and especially in the U.S. 1 Corridor. I will introduce legislation in January to end these abusive practices.

There are many kinds of high-interest or predatory loans. First, payday loans are loans that are secured against a consumer’s pay check. In 2009, the Virginia General Assembly enacted restrictions on payday loans which caused the practice to scale back to about six locations in and around the 36th District.

Antonio William “Tony” Rivas, III, 63, of Martinsburg, WVa. passed away Tuesday, December 11, 2018, at Berkeley Medical Center.

Tony was born in 1955 in New York, New York, the son of the late Rose Benesch and Antonio Rivas, II. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corp, achieving the rank of Private 1st Class. Tony delivered mail for the United States Postal Service and was a Bellman at the Crystal City Marriott. He was of the Catholic faith.

A confirmation letter to Harry Wiggins acknowledging the creation of the “Republicans for Stanley Bender” political action committee was sent in error.

The Virginia State Board of Elections on Friday is expected to hear a recap of the Nov. 6 General Elections, and in it a briefing on the Republicans for Stanley Bender PAC that, according to state documents, was created by former Prince William County Democratic Chairman Harry Wiggins just prior to election day.

MANASSAS — (Press Release) To protect and restore native vegetation, promote healthy and diverse forests and protect historic landscapes, Manassas National Battlefield Park will implement previously approved white-tailed deer management plans for the first time.

Extensive safety measures will be in place during operations, which will take place at night when the park is closed. Biologists, who are also highly trained firearms experts from the U.S. Department of Agriculture will work under the direction of National Park Service (NPS) natural resource management specialists and in coordination with park law enforcement rangers to conduct reduction actions safely and effectively.


STAFFORD — (Press Release) A suspect was is charged with attempted first-degree murder she ran over her girlfriend’s leg with her vehicle in Stafford County.

On December 18, 2018, 9:06 p.m., deputies were called to a report of a pedestrian struck in the area of Cynthias Place in the England Run North Apartments. They learned that a female subject ran over her girlfriend with her vehicle.


Traffic

WOODBRIDGE — The prospect of more parking spaces is closer to reality for Woodbridge commuters.

The Prince William County Board of Supervisors is expected to approve a new 1,414-space garage in February. The $37- million garage will be located near a Wegmans store at Stonebridge at Potomac Town Center, said Board Chairman At-large Corey Stewart.

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY — Willie Deutsch will seek re-election to the Prince William County School Board as its Coles District member. Though School Board races are non-partisan, the incumbent is the first Republican to announce their candidacy for the seat.

All the seats for the school board are up for reelection on November 5, 2019. Deutsch was elected to the school board in 2015, his first time elected to public office.
