Voting along party lines, house subcommittee kills ERA

RICHMOND — A House of Delegates subcommittee killed four bills to ratify the federal Equal Rights Amendment on a 4-2 party-line vote Tuesday amid verbal conflicts between the chairwoman and members of the audience.

The decision to “pass by indefinitely” HJ 577, HJ 579, HJ 583 and SJ 284 marks the end for efforts to pass legislation ratifying the ERA — a proposed amendment to the U.S. Constitution preventing sex discrimination — unless it is brought up in the full House Privileges and Elections Committee Friday.

I-95 at Occoquan to FredEx: $1 billion in transportation improvements coming

WOODBRIDGE — Gov. Ralph Northam today announced multiple major transportation improvements in the region.

The first and most debated will the extension of the Interstate 95 southbound fourth lane from Route 123 at Occoquan to Prince William Parkway. Dubbed an auxiliary lane, the project will move south a bottleneck that occurs when the I-95 south travel lanes merge from four to three as drivers cross the Occoquan River from Fairfax into Prince William County.

Fire rips through Woodbridge home

WOODBRIDGE — (Press Release) Firefighters were called to a report of a house fire at 1946 Richmond Ave Woodbridge at 8:21 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25.

Initial units arrived on scene within minutes and reported smoke from the front door of the home. The fire was quickly located in the basement and was under control within 15 minutes.

RICHMOND — Virginia is the only state where a governor cannot serve two consecutive terms. But if voters think their governor is doing a good job, why shouldn’t he or she be re-elected?

Democrats, who have won the past two gubernatorial elections, generally support allowing governors to succeed themselves. Republicans generally oppose it. Political experts say Virginia’s one-term policy for governors is rooted in history.
