Volunteers still needed despite coronavirus outbreak

Virginia residents are hunkering down to prevent the spread of coronavirus in the wake of Governor Northam’s “Stay at Home” order; but they can still volunteer, and there are plenty of opportunities locally to do so.

The Governor’s Executive Order permits individuals to leave their homes for “volunteering with organizations that provide charitable or social services,” and there are several opportunities that local residents can partake in, according to an e-mail from Jan Hawkins, Program Director for the Greater Prince William Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP).

Sandra O'Bannon celebrated her 60th birthday in the driveway of her Manassas home, with full social distancing measures in place.

Carolyn Ann Zavecz-Apperson

Carolyn Zavecz-Apperson, Age 52 passed peacefully in her sleep on March 29, 2020 after a long struggle with breast cancer at her parent’s home. Carolyn was born at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma in 1967, graduated from Heidelberg American High School in Germany, Class of 1985.  She attended the University of Maryland in Munich, Germany.  She is survived by her parents Leslie and Barbara (Dreisbach) Zavecz of Montclair, VA and her sister Janet of Fredericksburg, VA. Survivors include her husband, John Patrick Apperson, Jr., daughter Alexa and son, Zachary. Funeral arrangements are private and under the direction of the Mountcastle Truch Funeral Home 4143 Dale Blvd Dale City Va 22193.

VDOT plans pipe replacement work on Dale Boulevard

Eastbound Dale Boulevard (Route 784) between Minnieville Road and Forestdale Avenue will have daytime lane closures (weather permitting) Monday, April 6 through Friday, April 10 to replace a stormwater pipe, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The single-lane closures will occur between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. each day.

Shoulder widening work to begin on at Decatur and Ramoth Church roads in Stafford

During April, construction crews will start a safety widening project along sections of Route 635 (Decatur Road) and Route 628 (Ramoth Church Road) in Stafford County to expand the road shoulders.

Widening the shoulders will provide more recovery space for drivers if their vehicle strays from the travel lanes. The project is intended to reduce the risk of crashes and injuries that can result from vehicles running off the road.

Occoquan residents get their mail from the post office. Coronavirus hasn’t changed that
