Growing up in Mapledale in the 1990s, as I did, there were few places you could get to by walking.

In the neighborhood in Dale City, there was, and still is Giant Food grocery store, and there were two gas stations — a Mobile (now the site of a Sheetz) and an Amoco (now a BP station).


Business

The United Food & Commercial Workers Local 400 is demanding that food workers be designated as first responders, and a strict limit be placed on the number of customers allowed in grocery stores.

There are still no removal plans for the slave auction block located on the corner of William and Charles in Downtown Fredericksburg.

This auction block was the cause of widespread debate in the community, but in July of 2019, the City Council decided that the block would be relocated to the Fredericksburg Area Museum. The costs associated with moving the stone were anticipated to be $30,000.


Politics

Gov. Ralph Northam recently signed a bill that would define hemp extract, such as CBD, as food and usher in state regulations on these products.

Senate Bill 918, patroned by Sen. David Marsden, D-Fairfax, will help guide the budding industrial hemp industry in Virginia by regulating facility conditions and requirements for the production of hemp-derived products intended for human consumption.
