The City of Manassas Fire and Rescue Department’s newest recruit began his tenure this week: Chief William A. Garrett.
Garrett, a Fairfax County native, and the first African-American to hold this position in the city replaced former fire chief Rob Clemons, who announced his retirement in late February. Clemons had been in the position since 2016, having replaced former longtime Chief Brett Bowman.
Students returning to campus this fall will find vending machines stocked full of snacks, sodas, and now personal protective equipment too.
The machines located throughout Richmond-based Virginia Commonwealth University are filled with masks and hand sanitizer and soon, wipes. The supplies are available to students and employees for free, with a once a month limit. Individuals choose what they need and swipe their VCUCard to dispense a product.
A tornado watch is now in effect for the entire region until 10 p.m.
Prince William, Stafford, and Spotsylvania counties are included in the watch area. The cities of Fredericksburg, Manassas, and Manassas Park are also included in the watch zone.
Virginia is one step closer to running more passenger trains across the Potomac River.
State officials announced today the completion of an environmental study for a new Long Bridge that would replace the current bridge over the Potomac River, linking Virginia with Washington, D.C. The new bridge is the worst railroad bottleneck on the east coast, would allow Amtrak to double the number of trains it runs, as well as allow Virginia Railway Express to run its commuter trains later on weekdays, and on weekends.
Prince William police will participate in a prescription drug takeback day.
