Death Investigation – On February 23 at 4:52AM, officers responded to the Prince William-Manassas Adult Detention Center (ADC) located at 9320 Lee Ave. in Manassas (20110) to investigate the death of an inmate.

The investigation revealed that an inmate, identified as a 26-year-old man, was located unresponsive by another inmate inside his cell. Medical staff responded and provided first aid until fire and rescue personnel arrived. The inmate was pronounced dead at the ADC.

BEACON for Adult Literacy, a non-profit community-based literacy organization, is hosting a Virtual Walkathon for Literacy from April 10-30, 2021.

The Walk will benefit BEACON’s programs which provide English classes, U.S. Citizenship exam preparation, and job readiness skills training to adults in our community. Its mission is, “To empower adult language learners in Prince William County to meet their personal and professional goals.”


Politics

Today the Virginia House of Delegates passed Senator Scott Surovell’s legislation to raise Virginia’s auto insurance minimum coverage limits. SB 1182 has now passed out of the Senate and House of Delegates. The legislation awaits Governor Ralph Northam’s signature to become law.

Virginia’s insurance minimum coverage limits have not changed since Surovell was 4 years old in 1975. They constitute the lowest level of insurance that is required to drive a car.

Join the New Dominion Choraliers put on a concert to honor the 250th Anniversary of the USA! The music in this choral concert captures the heart and soul of the American spirit through patriotic tunes and songs from the heartland. Joining the chorus are dancers from Dance Etc. School of the Arts and accompaniment from the talented members of Legacy Brass.

This family friendly and FREE event is perfect for young and old. Kids, parents, and grandparents will be familiar with many of the songs in this inspirational program. There are two opportunities to attend: Saturday, May 2 at 7:30 pm or Sunday, May 3 at 3:30 p.m.

Multiple jurisdictions in our region are reopening their local governments to the public.

The Board of Supervisors will resume meetings with in-person public comments on Tuesday, March 2, 2021. Those seeking to make public comments at either the 3:00 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. meeting will be checked at the front door.

Obituaries

Louise Margaret Swim, 92, of Manassas, VA, passed away on February 16, 2021.

Louise was born in Arlington, VA to Margaret Broderick on March 1, 1928.  She was raised by her aunt and uncle in Arlington, VA.  She married Jake D. Swim on December 31, 1983, in Manassas, VA. Louise was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and a very hard worker for all her life.  She worked as a custodian and retail clerk for many years.   At 92, she was beautiful with her crystal blue eyes, sharp as could be, charming, smart, and very funny.  Her personality undoubtedly made friends easily.  She loved spending time with her dog, Princess, and was very involved in gardening and maintaining her yard and house.  Her contagious laugh, smile, and determination will be remembered forever.


Prince William

The Emergency Housing Assistance Program will be provided to all eligible households who reside in Prince William County and the cities of Manassas and Manassas Park, who have experienced financial hardship due to COVID-19.

The program will provide recipients with a one-time or short-term (no more than six consecutive months payments) of emergency mortgage and utility housing assistance to “prevent, prepare for, and respond to coronavirus.


Units were called to the 5000 block of Fishers Hill Way (Haymarket) when an occupant smelled smoke and observed flames from his attic.

Crews arrived with a working fire in the attic. Within 10 minutes the fire was under control. The home sustained moderate damage and no injuries were reported.
