PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY — The 13th high school to be built in Prince William County in an effort to ease overcrowding is predicted to be a success — sort of.

The new high school, to be built on Progress Court near Jiffy Lube Live, is scheduled to open in 2021. Accommodating more than 2,500 students and a price tag of $133.4 million, it is expected to ease the crowded conditions at Battlefield, Patriot and Stonewall high schools.


STAFFORD COUNTY — Widewater State Park officially opened today, becoming the 38th state park in Virginia.

Gov. Ralph Northam stood with the Potomac River at his back and spoke to a crowd of more than 200 people at a grand-opening ceremony.


WOODBRIDGE — When it comes to the cost of removing children from trailer classrooms, $143 million may be too much to swallow.

The joint county/schools capital process team voted Oct. 29 to move forward with a $143.2 million plan to build new classroom space that would lead to the removal of more than 100 portable trailer classrooms stationed at Prince William County Public Schools.


FREDERICKSBURG — University of Mary Washington’s College of Business has been trying to gain accreditation for the last seven years.

On October 18, UMW’s College of Business hosted former interim Secretary of the U.S. Navy Sean Stackley at an executive breakfast meeting for students, faculty, alumni, and members of the local business community. The university hopes more engagements like these will help further it’s path to accreditation.


PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY — Muslims have a new mosque in which to worship, and a worldwide religious leader held an inaugural celebration.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim community welcomed their fifth Khalifa (Caliph), His Holiness Mirza Masroor Ahmad, to inaugurate the Masroor Mosque on Saturday, located at 5640 Hoadly Road near Woodbridge. This marks Mirza Masroor Ahmad’s first visit to the U.S. in years on a tour that also included stops in Houston, Philadelphia, and Baltimore.


MANASSAS — Democrats will rally in Prince William County during the final hours of the 2018 mid-term elections campaign.

Senator Tim Kaine will be joined by fellow Democrats Vangie Williams and Jennifer Wexton, who is running for Congress in the 1st and 10th Districts, respectively.


MANASSAS PARK — Massive city debt has crippled badly needed updates to Manassas Park’s water system, city officials confirmed.

At least half of Manassas Park’s water system pipes are 65 years old, laid when installation was mostly unregulated and not held to particular standards. As a result, breaks are common occurrences, especially as cold weather approaches.


WASHINGTON — Sen. Tim Kaine is pushing for federal protection for school drinking water on top of Virginia’s state-mandated protections for students.

Kaine joined 34 others in calling the Department of Education and the Environmental Protection Agency to protect students from lead in drinking water.
