A historic African-American church still hopes to rebuild after an arson in 2012.

Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, located at 15008 Lee Highway in Gainesville was the scene of arson in 2012. Parishioners watched helplessly as the church was nearly reduced to ashes.


Osbourn Park graduate Thumay Huynh was awarded $5,000 through Diabetes Scholars, a program of the nonprofit organization Beyond Type 1.

She will attend the University of Virginia and plans to study computer science with a minor in business. 


Tuesday, volunteers filled 603 boxes in just three hours as part of Sentara Healthcare’s newly launched “We Care” initiative. The “We Care” model is to meet increased food insecurity in communities throughout Virginia.

These boxes have a five-day food supply for families. In addition to providing healthy, nourishing meals the boxes can be easily assembled to provide safe, low-touch distribution at existing locations managed by the Federation of Virginia Food Banks. In total, the “We Care” initiative will support the distribution of roughly 100,000 boxes.


Fredericksburg is in the midst of its annual restaurant week and it could be a step in getting back to normal following the coronavirus shutdown.

Starting today, participating restaurants are offering a menu of breakfast, lunch, dinner, and drink specials that are sold at price points in the “20 of 2020” range, between $4.20 and $40.20.
