National Weather Service: “Forecast high temperatures today are in the upper 80s for much of the area, breaking 90 at some locations. Clouds increase throughout the day. Shower and thunderstorm chances spread west to east this evening and continue into Monday.”

“Today: Mostly sunny, with a high near 89. South wind 7 to 13 mph. Tonight: A chance of showers between 2 am and 5 am, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 5 am. Mostly cloudy, with a low of around 68. South wind 11 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.”

FredNats fall 6-4 to Charleston

Fredericksburg Nationals: “Fredericksburg jumped ahead early, but eventually lost 6-4 to the Charleston Riverdogs. It was a big first inning for the Nats, as Johnathon Thomas singled and Elijah Green walked to quickly put runners aboard. Paul Witt then clobbered his team-leading seventh home run to put the Nationals ahead 3-0.”

“Jarlin Susana was sharp through three innings, allowing just one run to score on a balk. But in the fourth, a single and a pair of wild pitches allowed the Riverdogs to pull within a run at 3-2.”

Girl beaten at Parkside Middle School, taken to hospital

“The investigation revealed the victim, a 14-year-old female juvenile, was in the restroom of the school when another female student, identified as the accused, entered the restroom. The accused approached the victim from behind and grabbed the victim’s hair pulling her to the ground.”

“While on the ground, the accused struck the victim multiple times before leaving the restroom. The victim went to the school nurse and was later transported to an area hospital where they determined her injuries were non-life threatening. On June 6, following the investigation, the accused, identified as a 14-year-old female juvenile, was arrested.”

Virginia AG urges tougher rules on spam calls, texts

“Sleazy ‘lead generators’ try to trick people into consenting to receive spam calls or texts from hundreds of companies they’ve never heard of and never want to hear from. We are asking the FCC to toughen the rules on consent requirements so Virginians only hear from organizations they agree to,” said Attorney General Miyares.”

“The FCC is proposing to amend its rule concerning consent to close a so-called “lead generator loophole.” Lead generators are entities that collect personal information (like telephone numbers) from consumers and sell it to third parties, who then use that information to solicit consumers to purchase goods or services. As the attorneys general explain, “Telemarketers, voice service providers, and scammers need people to call (and/or text),” so lead generators have “proliferated into a billion-dollar industry.”

Boateng, a 2014 graduate of Gar-Field High School, began a service project during her junior year there that developed into a nonprofit organization.”

Northern Virginia commission identifies $600M worth of climate-change projects

The Center Square: “The Northern Virginia Regional Commission evaluated the climate-change readiness of the region and its military installations – identifying 129 projects to address readiness gaps.”

“Utilizing a $1.5 million Department of Defense grant, multiple counties and municipal governments participated in the study, such as Arlington, Fairfax, Prince William and Stafford counties, home to Joint Base Ft. Myer-Henderson Hall, Ft. Belvoir and the 58,000-acre Quantico Marine base.”

E-ZPass lanes between Garrisonville, Courthouse roads will be closed nightly

“During the single lane closure between 8 p.m. and 12 a.m., the 95 Express Lanes will be traveling southbound. The Lanes are regularly closed between 12 a.m. and 2 a.m. on weeknights for southbound to northbound reversal. When the reversal is complete, the entry points near Courthouse Road and near Garrisonville Road will remain closed until 4 a.m. The southern most entry point into the 95 Express Lanes during this time will be near Dumfries Road.”

“Travelers are reminded to avoid distractions, reduce speeds, and stay alert for signage directing traffic.”

FredNats took first loss of series against Riverdogs

Fredericksburg Nationals: “The FredNats took their first loss of the series this week, falling 4-1 against the Charleston Riverdogs.”

“After the first two innings went by scoreless, the Riverdogs drew first blood in the top of the third inning. Cooper Kinney worked a walk with two outs in the frame, then Dom Keegan quickly doubled off the wall in center field to plate Kinney and give the ‘Dogs a 1-0 edge.”
