Following the January 25 arrest of London Colvin, an Army reservist and Norfolk State University student, an internal investigation led to the dismissal of four officers.
The arrest was deemed an excessive use of force in a statement made by Norfolk Police Chief Michael Goldsmith.

The Stafford County School Board has approved a make-up plan for all of the days students missed in school this winter, due to inclement weather.Â
The school board voted to use the waiver method to make up the school days missed, according to Valerie Cottongim, Public Information Officer for Stafford County Public Schools.
According to a release, the last day of school in Stafford will now be June 12, and will include an early release day.

On April 9, George Mason University (GMU) and the Potomac Environmental Research and Education Center (PERC) will be hosting four STEM competitions for 1,000 students.
The competitions will take place at GMUâs Fairfax campus, and will host students from schools around the region.
âThis particular event has been happening for the last three years, and itâs always hosted by George Mason University. Itâs not your traditional competitionâŠthe key difference is these kids are actually tasked with making a real tangible difference in their community,â said Elizabeth Striano, an organizer for the event and graduate student.

Months after a Rolling Stone article detailed an alleged rape of a University of Virginia (UVA) student, the universityâs president Teresa Sullivan has announced a new sexual misconduct policy that will be taking effect.
Sullivan, who was elected to the position back in 2010, spoke with Potomac Local about the new policy.
âIt differs quite a lot from the one in 2011âŠone [way] is that it covers both employees and students. We used to have one for faculty and staff and one for students,â said Sullivan.

Don Shaw, an Air Force veteran and management consultant, has announced his candidacy for the 13th district delegate seat.
Incumbent Bob Marshall currently holds the seat.
Shaw stated that he worked for the federal government at the Department of Defense for eight years, before leaving to work for federal contractor BAI Incorporated. Additionally, Shaw has two masters degrees â one from Troy University and another from Syracuse University.

The Stafford County Department of Utilities has started the bidding process for a new 1 million gallon water tank to be built in Stafford on Greenbank Road.
The project has been budgeted for $2.5 million in the capital improvements plan for the county, said Mike Smith, Director of the utility department.
Residents are currently served by the water tank on Berea Church Road, which will remain in service until the new tank is completed, according to Bryon Counsell, manager for the project at the Stafford utility department.

Rick Smith, an information technology director, and life-long Prince William County resident has announced his candidacy for Chairman of the Prince William County Board of Supervisors.
The incumbent, Chairman At-Large Corey Stewart, will have to face off with primary candidate Chris Crawford in the upcoming Republican firehouse primary in April.
Smith was a graduate of Osbourne Park High School in Manassas and has a degree in business administration from Strayer University.

Prince William County Dogs, the Prince William Parks & Recreation Department, the Prince William Trails and Streams Coalition and the Lake Ridge Parks & Recreation Association will be hosting a âdog walkâ fundraiser in Lake Ridge Park.
The 3-mile walk will take place on April 26 at 12 p.m at 12350 Cotton Mill Drive.
The Prince William County Dogs group is partnering with local organizations for this fundraiser, as a way of funding improvements to the K9 Gunner Memorial Dog Park, which is located on 13000 Minnieville Road in Dale City.

As part of Prince William Countyâs Capital Improvement Program (CIP), Rippon Middle School is undergoing an addition of eight classrooms, while the county tackles the issue of running out of space for future school sites.
According to Phil Kavits, Communication Director for Prince William County Schools, the addition at Rippon Middle School is being done to deal with overcrowding.
â[Ripponâs addition] is slated to open in September 2016, as at cost of approximately $7.4 million. It will relieve overcrowding stemming from enrollment growth. Rippon has a capacity of 1139 students. By 2016, it is projected to be at 109% of current capacity, which would obviously addressed by the new space,â said Kavits.
