“Steve the Crane” to spawn children’s book

BRISTOW – (Press Release) Bristow award-winning author Katherine Gotthardt, M.Ed. has announced a new project about an unusual local celebrity; a crane named “Steve.”

The crane, owned by Maryland-based Digging & Rigging, Inc. made a hit because of it shape that resembled a robot. Members of the Facebook group Western Prince William Chatter took photos, created memes and dubbed the crane “Steve.” Digging & Rigging, Inc. subsequently put a nametag on the crane, much to the amusement of not just the community, but the local and national news.

Prince William welcomes National Preparedness Month

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY – (Press Release) National Preparedness Month is a yearly campaign during the month of September intended to raise awareness of the need for individuals, families, neighborhoods, communities, businesses, and the nation to be prepared for natural, human-caused, and technological disasters.

This year’s theme is Prepared, Not Scared with a special emphasis on empowering children to make decisions in an emergency when parents are not around.

OmniRide testing double-door bus in September

WOODBRIDGE – (Press Release) OmniRide will test a new style of commuter bus for several weeks in September, continuing to research what vehicles should be included in its fleet of the future.

The new bus that’s being tested features two exits – one at the front and one in the middle – so passengers can disembark quickly. Passengers will continue to enter at the front door where the fare box is located.

Stafford County man wins more than $80,000 in Virginia lottery

STAFFORD – (Press Release) Michael Coney wasn’t sure if the ticket in his hand was a winner or not. He was new to the Virginia Lottery’s Print ‘n Play Rolling Jackpot game and hadn’t yet got the hang of it. Turns out, the Stafford County man had just won a jackpot worth $81,924.

He bought his winning ticket at I-95 Citgo, located at 5416 Jefferson Davis Highway in Spotsylvania.

Losing cash, Occoquan Spring Craft Show to be replaced by River Fest, Halloween event

The two new events come as the town’s annual spring craft show has steadily been losing money for the past six years. It’s one of two craft shows (spring and fall) that the town relies on to bring in tourists, and cash to town coffers to pay for capital projects.

From its high of about $54,000 in 2013, net revenue form the spring craft fair has dropped this year to $50,214. It was the final spring craft show for the town.

Woman enters Stafford vape store, nearly raped at gunpoint

A woman was held with a gun to her head and nearly raped at a vaping supply store.

The 27-year-old victim walked into East Coast Vapers, at 432 Garrisonville Road in North Stafford, just before it closed Friday, August 30. A store employee then pointed a gun at her head and tried to sexually assault her, according to the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office.

Ribbon-cutting duties to go to Fredericksburg Chamber of Commerce

Stafford’s Economic Development and Tourism office (ED&T) staff have been spending too much time at ribbon cuttings for new businesses that crop up in the county.

A new agreement between ED&T and the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce aims to have ribbon cuttings hosted by the Chamber of Commerce. As it stands, both ED&T and the Chamber of Commerce both offer to do host ribbon-cutting ceremonies, duplicating efforts.
