Students across Virginia will not be going back to school this academic year.

Gov. Ralph Northam today announced schools would not reopen due to the spread of coronavirus around the state, which has killed six people and infected 254 in the state as of today. Across the U.S., a total of 33,404 people have been infected and 400 have died.


Obituaries

John R. Cramer, of Dover, Del. passed away Monday, March 16, 2020, at home. He was the son of the late Harry and Alice Cramer.

John proudly served in the U.S. Army. He was actually stationed in Germany at the same time as Elvis Presley though he neglected to get his autograph. After his time in the Army, John spent 30 years working for the United States Postal Service.


Prince William

On Tuesday, we told you where residents can get meals distributed to them by the government in the wake of the spread of the Chinese coronavirus.

Today, we’re hearing two new elementary schools in Prince William County have been added to that list of distribution sites — Coles Elementary School, located 7405 Hoadly Road near Manassas,  and Yorkshire Elementary School, located at 7610 Old Centreville Road near Manassas.

The 37 members of the 131st Basic Session graduated Tuesday, March 17, 2020, in advance of their originally scheduled graduation date of Friday, March 20, 2020.

In accordance with Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam’s directives related to COVID-19, traditional commencement exercises were canceled for Friday for the 36 new Troopers and one new Special Agent Accountant.

Despite schools across Virginia being closed for at least two weeks, school divisions in our area are doing what they can to keep up with the demand of providing meals for economically disadvantaged children.

In Prince William County, to-go meals will be provided to all children under the age of 18 present at the time of service, without charge, regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability, and there will be no discrimination during the meal service, according to the school division.

Stafford County Public School students started their spring break on Friday, March 13, 2020.

While students were out, teachers had a scheduled workday on Friday. As the day wore on, we learned that Stafford students, much like students across Virginia, would not be returning to class when the scheduled spring break ends March 23.
