Dr. Karen Spillman, former Principal of Colonial Forge High School in Stafford, handed in her resignation to the Stafford County School Board on Tuesday night.

Spilllman came into the spotlight last week after she ordered a suspension for 14-year-old Bryan Thompson – a student at Colonial Forge who donned a banana costume and ran down the football field during halftime Sept. 16. After threatening to suspend Thompson for an entire year, the student was reinstated in his school after serving half of his 10 day suspension, and an apology was issued by the county school superintended after Spillman disciplined students who wore t-shirts that stated “free Banana Man” following Thompson’s suspension.

North Stafford, Va. — Landslide victims will not get their meeting with the developer of their property.

Richard Wolf with George H. Rucker Realty Corp., the developer of the Austin Ridge subdivision in North Stafford, says county officials asked him to meet with them and two families whose homes are threatened by a landslide that developed Sept. 10.


Prince William

Dale City, Va. — Children took to a fresh sheet of ice Saturday as the Prince William Ice Center welcomed their hockey teams back home.

With a certificate of occupancy fresh off the presses, hockey fanatics and new players alike broke in the new sheet of ice on the “NHL” side.

Boys and girls between the ages of eight and 17-years-old are encouraged to sign up in organized leagues that will play their games at middle schools in Stafford County on week nights and Saturdays.

Middle and high school students who plan to try out for their school teams should indicate their intention on their tryout form and their tryout fees will be refunded once they make the scholastic teams, according to Stafford officials.


Politics

The National Federation of Independent Business, Virginia’s leading small-business association, has endorsed Jeff Frederick in the 36th Senate District race.

The endorsement was made by NFIB/Virginia SAFE (Save America’s Free Enterprise) Trust, which is comprised exclusively of NFIB members. NFIB has 6,000 small-business members throughout the Commonwealth.


Prince William

Woodbridge, Va. — More than 40 families remain without permanent housing following floods that ravaged the Holly Acres Mobile Home Park earlier this month.

Today, those families along with the Woodbridge Flood Victims Committee will hold a press conference to announce a benefit concert for the flood victims. That conference is scheduled at noon at the Woodbridge mobile home park where so many are still trying to put their lives back together, said Ricardo Juarez Nava with Mexicans Without Borders.

Woodbridge, Va. — The possibility of a Metro station and solutions for traffic congestion in Prince William County was the focus of a Metrorail to Prince William County meeting Monday night, hosted by Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-11, Fairfax, Prince William).

As part of its month-long anniversary celebration of service to the community, [the Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission] will host a community give-back event. On Tuesday, Sept/ 27 through Thursday, Sept. 29, PRTC will collect small non-perishables, toiletries and infant care items on the buses.

All donations will be given to two area social service organizations: Action in the Community Through Service (ACTS) and Securing Emergency Resources Through Volunteer Efforts (SERVE).
