WOODBRIDGE, Va. – Behind a strong start from Matt Grace, the Potomac Nationals defeated the Wilmington Blue Rocks 3-1 on Sunday at Pfitzner Stadium. Potomac reclaimed second place from Wilmington in the Northern Division from Wilmington with the win.

Wilmington fireballer Yordano Ventura got the start and was touching the high 90s throughout his outing. Kevin Keyes opened the scoring by hitting a fastball off the batters eye in dead center field to lead off the third inning to give Potomac a 1-0 lead. It was the fifth homer of the season for Keyes.

DUMFRIES, Va. — Vendors, crafters, musical acts, dancers, and barbeque restaurateurs all converged on Garrison Park in Dumfries on Saturday for the Third Annual Dumfries Multicultural Festival.

The Super Moon made its appearance over the Potomac Communities on Saturday night despite persistent clouds that hung out after a round of showers and thunderstorms moved through earlier in the day.

The moon, which is the same moon that appears every other night, appeared 30 percent brighter and 14 percent bigger on Saturday night.

STAFFORD, Va. — Next week, work will begin to improve the quality of the ride for motorists on Interstate 95 in the Fredericksburg region by paving multiple segments of northbound and southbound I-95 in Caroline, Spotsylvania and Stafford counties.

Collectively, 63 individual lane miles of I-95 will be milled and paved in the Fredericksburg region this year. Milling and paving eliminates persistent potholes, ruts and cracking, and establishes a new, smooth surface for driving that can withstand the persistent high volume and heavy weight of interstate traffic.

WOODBRIDGE, Va. — The Woodbridge Potomac Communities Civic Association (WPCCA) awarded Beautification Awards to four local businesses for their efforts to improve the aesthetics of the Woodbridge District. The awards are part of WPCCA’s “Keep Woodbridge Beautiful” program, a community beautification action plan.

The recipients were Shear Scapes, Inc., Arban and Carosi, Inc., Vulcan Materials Co., and Koons Kia of Woodbridge.

WOODBRIDGE, Va. — GEICO annually pays tribute to an active duty enlisted service member from each branch of the armed services, as well as one drilling reservist from all components, for their special achievements and contributions to the public good of the civilian and/or military community.

Operations Specialist First Class David Neuner, stationed at the United States Coast Guard Navigation Center in Alexandria and an active member of the OWL Volunteer Fire Department, was recently selected as the 2011 Active Duty GEICO Military Service Award recipient for the Coast Guard.

WOODBRIDGE, Va. – With an RBI single from Kevin Keyes in the eighth and an excellent relief appearance from Trevor Holder, the Potomac Nationals defeated the Winston-Salem Dash 6-5 on Middle School Science Day. The Nationals and Dash split a four-game series.

The Nationals opened the scoring in the first off of Dash starter RHP Steve McCray. Blake Kelso walked and stole second — his tenth swipe in as many attempts. Justin Bloxom knocked a double to deep right-center that scored Kelso and Potomac had a 1-0 lead.

WOODBRIDGE, Va. — Prince William County Public Schools released new information about a principal charged with embezzlement.

Kilby Elementary School Principal Jenny Bermant has been on administrative leave since Monday following an investigation that found she charged $8,000 to a credit card that belonged to the school. The county’s school system launched an internal investigation first and then turned over their findings to police who then placed charges.
