OCCOQUAN, Va. — In Occoquan this weekend, visitors can mix lemonade, sunny weather, and a big dose of shopping to support local merchants.

The town will hold a Lemonade Yard Sale on Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The small shops will have yellow ribbons hanging on them, will offer discounts of up to 75 percent, and, of course, have plenty of lemonade, organizers said.

A new co-enrollment agreement will allow eligible students at Germanna to take a limited number of courses at UMW while they are still enrolled at the community college. A new direct transfer agreement will allow Germanna students to transfer into UMW’s liberal studies, or BLS, degree program, said UMW spokeswoman Marty Morrison.

A ceremony marking the new agreements will take place at the University’s Dodd Auditorium at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

STAFFORD, Va. — With the pomp and circumstance normally reserved for a presidential campaign speech, Stafford County welcomed Virginia Gov. Robert F. McDonnell to its public safety center Wednesday.

Arriving about 9:30 a.m. in a black motorcade traveling on Va. 630, McDonnell was greeted by uniformed officers from the county’s sheriff and fire agencies. A large U.S. flag was draped overhead from two ladder trucks from the fire department marking the spot where McDonnell would sign new bills into law that offer new protections for public safety workers, as well as expand their investigative powers.

FROM POLICE REPORTS:

Murder Investigation – On July 17 at 3:45 a.m., police responded to the 18300 block of Old Triangle Rd in Triangle (22172) for an initial report of a suicide in progress. The caller, later identified as the accused, initially called police to report that the victim had stabbed herself while in a residence in the above area. The victim was transported to an area hospital were she died as a result of a stab wound to her chest. Upon further investigation, detectives learned that the victim had not committed suicide and that she and the accused, her husband, were involved in a verbal altercation which escalated physically. During the encounter, the accused allegedly stabbed the victim with a knife. Detectives from the Homicide Unit obtained a warrant against the accused who was arrested without incident the same day.

DUMFRIES, Va. — Virginia’s first town isn’t known for its roadside barbeque stands. Dumfries banned them, along with all other roadside vendors, sending a message that you’ll have to drive through or sit down if you want to eat out.

Never will I ever risk getting a ticket on Northern Virginia’s High Occupancy Vehicle Lanes.

By not having a minimum number of passengers during the restricted hours, Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. northbound and 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. southbound, drivers take the chance of being ticketed, and those fines are not cheap. According to the Virginia Department of Transportation, the HOV lane fines in Northern Virginia range from $125 for the first offense to a maximum of $1,000 plus 3 points on your driving record for subsequent offenses.

“I hope we win the championship. I think we will, our team is really good and we have practiced a lot,” he said.

Manny, 9, came close to a championship last winter, but his team fell just a little short. Last February, the Gators faced off against the Raptors in the Championship game for the 9-10 year old division. Manny’s Gators played a hard fought game, but fell just short as they lost by four points.
