STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. — Law enforcement officers found a baby strapped to a car seat inside a motel.

Officers were called to Motel 6 at 401 Warrenton Road in Falmouth at 10:46 p.m. Tuesday after guests said they heard the incessant cries of a baby coming from a nearby room.

OCCOQUAN, Va. — The tiny village of Occoquan will light its Christmas Tree for the season on Friday, but not before some small-town community shopping fun.

The shops in the village from 4 to 8 p.m. will host an annual open house where merchants will feature several holiday items. It’s a great place to come and support the efforts of local businesses in the Potomac Communities.

Demographics. That’s the word I’ve seen over and over this past week as the pundits try to diagnose what’s wrong with Republicans. Last week’s presidential election certainly indicates that my party has a problem reaching minority voters. It’s a problem we must address, but the solution is not, as many suggest, to jettison our core principles to accommodate changing demographics. In fact, I think the answer is much simpler.

This was not the news I expected to report today. The closing of Prince William County’s only daily newspaper, News & Messenger, and its companion website, Insidenova.com, comes as a shock to all of us in the community journalism business.

MANASSAS, Va. — In business for more than 100 years, The Manassas News and Messenger and its companion website InsideNova.com will publish it’s last edition on Dec. 30.

The News and Messenger was purchased this year by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Company, which owns The Omaha World Herald.


Prince William

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. — Write by the Rails, a networking group of writers based in Prince William County, Manassas and Manassas Park, has been officially chartered as the Prince William Chapter of the Virginia Writers Club.

The announcement was made at VWC’s annual meeting Nov. 3 in Richmond. Local members June Kilpatrick and Linda Johnston of Gainesville and Terry Reardon of Woodbridge were in attendance.

LAKE RIDGE, Va. — The auxiliary gym at Woodbridge Senior High School was renamed “Gus” in honor of a former teacher and wrestling coach.

Community members gathered Saturday at the high school in Lake Ridge to rename a utility gym in honor of David “Gus” Swaggard who helped lead the Woodbridge Viking Wrestling Team to their first-ever championship win during the 1973 -74 season. Swaggard also helped the team get its first shutout win, a 49-0 victory.
