New Committees
The Rules Committee assigned me to three committees. (1) The Local Government Committee considers legislation addressing land use, zoning and local government. (2) The Rehabilitation and Social Services Committee has jurisdiction over the safety net programs, prisons, alcoholic beverage regulation and childcare. (3) The General Laws and Technology Committee examines bills affecting homeowners associations, gambling, professional occupation regulation, procurement and the Freedom of Information Act. Each of these has jurisdiction over issues critical to the quality of life in our area.
A new OmniRide budget calls for cutting services and raising fares.
Fares could increase by 5% starting in July to offset a $9.2 million budget shortfall for Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission, the agency that operates OmniRide commuter, and OmniLink local buses. The fare increase is on top of fares that have already increased by 30% since 2009.
Construction crews will begin relocating gas lines in Manassas Park on Monday.
The work will take place at the intersection of Euclid Avenue and Manassas Drive, and is being done in advance of roadwork to occur in the area.
Federal authorities said two men from Woodbridge intended to go to Syria to join ISIS.
One man was arrested at Richmond International Airport on Friday. The second man was arrested in Woodbridge, after he returned from driving the first suspect to the airport.
Ruth Anderson will hold a town hall meeting Monday night after a series of written threats appeared at area high schools.
The threats appeared on bathroom walls and Woodbridge, Gar-Field and Forest Park senior high schools in Woodbridge this month. All five messages that have appeared are similar and do not reference a credible threat.
Police are searching for the man who robbed a Manassas convenience store at gunpoint.
Authorities said a man walked into the In & Out Mart at 8930 Ashton Avenue and demanded cash from the clerk. The man pointed a handgun at the clerk who complied with the robber’s demands.
