STAFFORD — He doesn’t have big political aspirations, but he stepped up to be the GOP’s man in a pinch.

Michael Makee (pronounced Mackie) retired as Naval Commander after 20 years and is the Republican replacement candidate in Virginia’s House District 2. The 47-year-old Naval Academy graduate stepped in after Laquan Austion dropped out of the race on Friday.

Virginia State Police continue morn the loss of two of their own — one of them from Prince William County.

The two troopers were killed Saturday after a police helicopter they were in crashed on a farm outside Charlottesville. The troopers were monitoring the fatal protest in the city where one woman was killed and several others injured during a white nationalist march.

WOODBRIDGE — Election officers in Prince William County may get raise.

The county’s Electoral Board is reviewing a plan to increase pay for its election officers who work long hours on Election Day in November, during town elections in May, June primaries, and on special elections such as this year’s Clerk of the Court vote.

MANASSAS — Airplane owners and repair shops will get a tax break.

Small airplane small repair shops and larger maintenance, repair, and overhaul aircraft facilities commonly referred to as MROs will get a break when they purchase parts, supplies, or engines to maintain an aircraft. Delegate Richard Anderson, an Air Force Colonel and former head of the Civil Air Patrol introduced the legislation during this year’s General Assembly.

DUMFRIES — The Town of Dumfries has submitted a project application to Virginia’s SMART SCALE program, with the intent of widening Northbound Route 1 from a two-lane undivided roadway to a six-lane divided roadway.

The project area is on Route 1 north/Fraley Boulevard between Brady’s Hill Road and Route 234.

A tornado touched down on Friday near the Prince William County line.

The wind storm measured EF-0 and was on the ground for two minutes between 6:08 and 6:10 p.m. Friday, August 11. It cut a path of damage about a mile long, 100 yards wide at Broad Run in Fauquier County near the Chapman Mill Historic Site.
