Church Crams Council Meeting

Dumfries, Va. —After nearly an hour and 45 minutes of listening to public comments, most from people associated with Grace Church, the Dumfries Town Council members looked a little worn. Forty-three people from various parts of Northern Virginia pleaded with the council not to pass a proposed amendment that would require churches to obtain a conditional use permit in order to operate. This move would be too costly to the church and force Grace Church and other churches out of Dumfries, according to many who commented Tuesday evening.

Prince William Courthouse Closed after Bomb Threat

Police by 3 p.m. had closed several streets around the judicial center that serves Prince William, Manassas, and Manassas Park and had evacuated everyone inside. Officials closed the courthouse for the remainder of the day, and bomb sniffing dogs were used to check the premises as well as any cars leaving courthouse, according to reports.

Just before 4 p.m., there had been no reports of any bombs found and no injuries.

Jogger Robbed at Gunpoint

The victim was running in the area of Windsong Way and Small Bear Ct., just off Stefaniga Road about just before 11 p.m., when a silver sedan passed him. He then saw the sedan turn around, turn off its headlights and drive toward him.

The victim heard an occupant of the car yell, and then the passenger brandished a handgun, put in the victim’s face and demanded money.

Stafford Aims to Prevent Flash Mob Robberies

Now, Stafford County authorities have launched a new initiative to stop flash mob robberies before they ever begin in that county.

“Flash Mobs bent on committing lawless acts have the potential to put the citizens of Stafford County in danger,” stated Sheriff Charles E. Jett in a press release. “Working together all of us can make sure that these types of crimes are stopped before they ever happen.”

New Turn Lane Open

Lake Ridge, Va. — Right-turn makers rejoice: a new right turn lane from Springwoods Drive to Old Bridge Road has opened.

The new lane now allows drivers headed to Prince William Parkway the option to turn right immediately without having to wait in what was a center multi-directional turn lane, which can now only be used to continue straight or to turn left.

Deck Fire Leads to Smoke Inhalation

North Stafford, Va. — One person was treated for smoke inhalation Monday after a fire broke out in at their home.

Fire and rescue crews from the Potomac Hills and Aquia fire stations were called to a fire at 154 Olympic Drive at 2:45 a.m. Monday, just off U.S. 1 in North Stafford.

School Bus Schedules Posted

Prince William and Stafford counties have both placed their bus schedules online making it easy for parents to find out what bus their child should take to and from school.

Stafford anticipates welcoming nearly 27,000 students to class on Tuesday while Prince William schools expect to see 86,000 students.

1 Killed in Joplin Road Crash

One man was killed and another person injured in a crash on Joplin Road near Triangle on September 5, 2011. (File)

Triangle, Va. —One man is dead and a woman seriously injured after their car flipped over while traveling on Joplin Road.

According to police, one occupant died at the scene while another is being flown to an area hospital for treatment. Both were found trapped inside the car.
