Last year, especially with PTA, I learned that fundraising is a compulsory part of public education. So, when I decided to home school our kids this year I thought my life would be blissfully devoid of hawking $100 a roll wrapping paper to friends and family.

But then I woke up and realized that as part of a “well-rounded,” “well-educated” child, we’d have to “sell, sell, sell!” for every activity we’re in. With three kids, that means we’re selling things for scouts, sports, dance, and even church fundraisers.

Boys and girls between the ages of eight and 17-years-old are encouraged to sign up in organized leagues that will play their games at middle schools in Stafford County on week nights and Saturdays.

Middle and high school students who plan to try out for their school teams should indicate their intention on their tryout form and their tryout fees will be refunded once they make the scholastic teams, according to Stafford officials.

As part of its month-long anniversary celebration of service to the community, [the Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission] will host a community give-back event. On Tuesday, Sept/ 27 through Thursday, Sept. 29, PRTC will collect small non-perishables, toiletries and infant care items on the buses.

All donations will be given to two area social service organizations: Action in the Community Through Service (ACTS) and Securing Emergency Resources Through Volunteer Efforts (SERVE).
