Flags Ordered at Half-Staff to Honor Va. Tech Officer

Flags over the state capitol and other government buildings in Virginia will be lowered at sunrise and remain at half-staff until sunset to honor Officer Derek Crouse who was shot and killed during a routine traffic stop Thursday. Also killed that day was the man police believe pulled the trigger – 22-year-old Ross Truett Ashley, of Spotsylvania County – who was found dead from a self-inflicted gun wound shortly after the Crouse was killed.

“I am deeply saddened by today’s news of another tragedy affecting the Virginia Tech community. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those impacted by these shootings. Since this news first broke we have been monitoring the situation closely and I have made available all requested state resources to Virginia Tech, including the Virginia State Police. I have also spoken to Virginia Tech President Charles Steger earlier this afternoon,” McDonnell said in a statement.

1 Ejected from Car

Fire and rescue personnel were called to mile post 16 along the two-lane road just before 2 p.m. Sunday. Four people were involved in the crash, and one person was ejected from the vehicle, according to initial reports.

One person was flown to an area hospital following the crash. Details have not been released by police.

Drivers Alerted to I-95 Travel Times

Starting Monday, drivers in the Potomac Communities who use Interstate 95 and 395 will see signs displaying travel times on the highway.

Electronic signs in seven spots along the highway between Dumfries and the Pentagon, like the first one that will be placed at I-95 and Va. 234 noting the time and distance it will take drivers to get to the Capital Beltway based on current traffic conditions, will be used to better inform drivers as they travel.

Car Used in PNC Robbery Found Burned

Following the robbery of a PNC Bank on Thursday morning, police were called to a residential area near Lindendale Road and Mapledale Avenue in nearby Dale City for a report of a car fire. Police found the car on a grassy field near power lines, a site regularly used as a soccer fields for team play.

Police used K9 units and a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol helicopter to search for the suspect who abandoned the vehicle but were unable to find anyone. The car was reported stolen in Prince William County on Nov. 29, said police.

Camels, Actors Portray Live Nativity

A living nativity scene captured the attention of drivers and onlookers in Woodbridge on Friday night.

Woodbridge, Va. — The nativity came alive Friday night in Woodbridge.

Actors and live animals, such as goats, camels, and sheep, paraded on an open field on Golansky Boulevard next to Belvoir Federal Credit Union. The scene was complete with the nativity depicting the birth of Jesus Christ, the inn that, according to the story of the nativity, was too full to let Jesus’ mother Mary and Joseph a room for a night, and a guardian angel to watch over the shepherds and the flock.

Potomac Mills Sign Returns

A new circular sign stretching 40-feet in diameter will be erected outside Potomac Mills mall in Woodbridge after high winds last winter blew away the old sign. (Photo: Stephanie Tipple/PotomacLocal.com)

Woodbridge, Va. — The iconic sign that tells drivers when they’ve reached one of the largest shopping destinations in Virginia is going back up.

Potomac Mills mall on Monday will erect a new sign 150 feet into the air where it will be seen along Interstate 95. The sign is circular, is 40-feet in diameter, and was shipped to Woodbridge from Richmond in 10 sections, said Capitol Signs spokesman Joe Howell.

$9.7 Million in Commuter Lot Improvements Eyed

North Stafford, Va. — Transportation officials want to add 1,000 new spaces to a commuter parking lot in North Stafford, and they want to know what you think about the idea.

The Virginia Department of Transportation will hold a design public hearing from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14, about the $9.7 million that would expand the Staffordboro commuter lot off Va. 610. The project would also improve traffic flow on Staffordboro Boulevard and Juggins Road by adding left and right turn lanes on Staffordboro Boulevard and a roundabout on Juggins Road, according to VDOT spokeswoman Kelly Hannon.
