Woodbridge, Va. — Just in time for summer weather, the Prince William Park Authority could be no more.

The authority, which has independent from the county government since its inception in 1977 , wants to become a department of the county government by June 30. If that happens, the authority would give up its current corporate structure and its executive board – a model its held since it was created by the Prince William County Board of Supervisors.

Stafford, Va. — Germanna Community College hopes to acquire 50 acres of land to expand in Stafford County.

Enrollment at the school is up to what college president Dr. David Sam calls an “unsustainable rate,” as the school – with two campuses and two centers, including an education center at the Aquia Park Shopping Center in North Stafford on U.S. 1 – has 7,800 students enrolled. That’s up from 5,000 in 2007.

According to the National Weather Service, the white stuff should fall mainly before 9 p.m. in our area. Up to an inch of accumulation is possible, mainly on grassy areas, forecasters said.

Stafford, Va. — Stafford County’s School Board is moving forward with selecting a new Board member to fill an open seat in its Garrisonville District. 

The Stafford County School Board will interview five candidates for the vacant Garrisonville District seat at special called meeting on Wednesday, February 8, 2012, beginning at 5 p.m. The five candidates from the Garrisonville district are Tonya Harris, Nanette Kidby, Alvin Martin, Sylvester Mitchell and Laura Sellers.

McDonnell signs bill that provides insurance coverage for autistic children
Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) has signed a bill — again — to provide insurance coverage for families with autistic children, according to his office, The Washington Post reports.

Ban on Open Booze Containers in Motor Vehicles Fails
Patch.com reports Legislation requiring alcoholic beverages to be in their original, sealed containers while being transported by motor vehicle died in a Senate committee Monday.


North Stafford, Va. — A Stafford sheriff’s deputy drew his taser weapon and got into a struggle with a suspect Monday night.

About 9 p.m., witnesses called 911 and reported seeing flashlights near an area with homes under construction as well as containers used for storing construction materials on Bismark Drive.
