On June 25, 2014 The Rotary Club of Lake Ridge Virginia awarded Northern Virginia Community College Woodbridge information desk commander, Lando Lowe the 2014 Unsung Hero award.

The prestigious award, which is presented at the organization’s annual Installation Dinner in June is intended to give recognition to a person or group of persons who typically are “under the radar” but whose contributions and service to the community personify Rotary International’s motto of Service Above Self.

WOODBRIDGE, Va. — Candidate Mark Gibson came up short  just 43 names.

News of Gibson being kicked out of a farmer’s market in Dale City while attempting to collect signatures appear on the November ballot made waves earlier this year. He was eventually back to the market with the proper permits, but in the end we learned he didn’t have enough valid signatures to get his name on the ballot, and now he is calling it quits.

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. — The effort to add toll lanes to a 29-mile stretch of highway in Northern Virginia is entering its final phase.

Construction crews plan to work day and night over the next six months to put the finishing touches on the 95 Express Lanes, converting the High Occupany Vehicle lanes from Dumfries to the Pentagon to toll lanes, and adding new lanes from Dumfries south to North Stafford.

David L. Cornelius, Sr., 61, of Lorton passed away Saturday, July 5, 2014, at home surrounded by family.

Cornelius, a native of Atlantic City, NJ, was a US Army veteran. He retired after 24 years in the Army, and continued his career as a federal government employee.

BRISTOW, Va. — Those who see spots on Friday could be wishing they were wearing them.

Customers at Chick-fil-A who come dressed like the fast food company’s signature icon, a dairy cow, will receive a free meal – but you have to be dressed head to tow in cow attire to get the free food. If you wear a white t-shirt with black spots on it, for example, you’ll get a free sandwich. Either way, it’s free food.

NORTH STAFFORD, Va. — A child found lifeless in a swimming pool and later taken to a hospital for treatment has died.

A patron of the Aquia Harbour swimming pool pulled 4-year-old Rico Rivera-Brayshaw from the water at 7:34 p.m. Sunday after he was found floating the pool, said Stafford sheriff’s spokesman Bill Kennedy. Lifeguards at the pool began CPR on the child and fire and rescue crews summoned to the pool then took over, added Kennedy.

MANASSAS, Va. — A 17-year-old male accused of sending nude photos of himself to his 15-year-old girlfriend will not be prosecuted.

Trey Simms was accused of “sexting” in January and was charged with manufacturing and distributing child pornography. According to WRC-TV, police wanted to take additional photos of his penis, by force if necessary, to compare them with photos they already had.
