DUMFRIES, Va. — Art, gift baskets, gift certificates, and historical memorabilia were silently auctioned off in Dumfries on Saturday night.
Historic Dumfries’ 2nd Annual Victorian Holiday Silent Auction was held at the Dumfries – Triangle Rescue Squad. About 200 people came to the event, each purchasing a ticket for $5 each to support the town’s museum, the Weems-Botts House, which served as the home of George Washington’s biographer.
Attendance for the event was up from last year, and so is attendance at the museum itself.
“Everything about our museum has grown,” said Historic Dumfries Director JoAnn Barron. “Our membership at the museum is up this year, and it’s great to see more people taking interest in our museum.”
A total of 170 items were donated to the auction from several area residents and businesses, including a collector’s plate depicting Prince William County landmarks, holiday gift baskets, afghan blankets, several pieces of art, ceramics, and restaurant gift certificates.
Jeremaiah’s Kansas City-style Barbecue fed the large crowd, and donated a whole roasted pig to the charity auction.
Barron said she began planning this event back in August.
