Worried about foreclosure? Reach out to a non-profit housing counselor.

If you or someone you know is worried about their mortgage or about foreclosure, the first and best option is to reach out to a non-profit housing counselor.

These counselors are available to provide free advice about the best options available to you to avoid foreclosure (mortgage modifications, refinances, short sales, etc.). They are certified by the federal or state government, trained on the most recent changes in bank and government policies, and often have better contacts at financial institutions to ensure a more accountable and timely response. Note: You should not pay for help working on a mortgage modification. Most companies charging an upfront fee for help are scam artists.

VOICE – Virginians Organized for Interfaith Community Engagement, a coalition of congregations and community organizations in northern Virginia – has been in a campaign to address some of the fallout from the housing crisis in the Prince William Area, where more than 20,000 families lost their homes to foreclosure.

One of the first issues VOICE leaders identified in their research was need to deepen the capacity of non-profit housing counselors in Northern Virginia and particularly in Prince William County and Manassas. Through direct negotiations with financial institutions, VOICE leaders have secured commitments for $1.6 million in funding for non-profit counselors in the Prince William area over 5 years to support the long-term capacity of these non-profits.
