Manassas was the biggest rival for the IBM campus that opened in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, in 1965, the News & Observer reports, in an item drawn from a new book on the park.
The item says that campus employed 1,000 people, more than half of them local, and that Virginia’s massive resistance after Brown v. Board of Education steered IBM to North Carolina. It says the last segregated school in Manassas stayed open until 1966.
IBM did build in Manassas later. That plant was smaller than the Research Triangle campus. The company announced the Manassas factory in October 1968.
