“We’re grateful for the prioritization of Paid Family and Medical Leave for the 2026 General Assembly session,” Virginia Scope reported. “Virginians need the certainty of a paycheck more than ever amid skyrocketing costs, and no one should have to forgo a paycheck just to care for a loved one or a new baby.”
“Virginians elected the largest House Democratic Majority in nearly four decades because they trust us to fight for them and deliver real results,” the publication reported. “These first bills honor that trust. Our agenda is focused on lowering costs, lifting wages, expanding opportunity, protecting Virginians’ rights, and ensuring fair representation.”
“For a group that ran on lowering costs, this sure looks like it’s going to make things more expensive,” the outlet reported.
Democrats, who now control both chambers and the Executive Mansion, have filed bills to raise the minimum wage to $15 by 2028 and create statewide paid family and medical leave. Additional proposals include paid sick leave requirements, a child care employee assistance program, universal free school breakfast, a weatherization task force, and the Right to Contraception Act. The 2026 legislative session begins January 14.
