New flashing crosswalk signs installed at three Stafford intersections

Pedestrians in Stafford County have new safety upgrades at three busy intersections. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has installed Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) and accessible ramps on Primmer House Road, Plantation Drive, and Woodcutters Road.

Each crossing is now equipped with flashing yellow lights that activate when a pedestrian presses a button. The lights are designed to alert drivers that someone is preparing to cross, improving visibility and safety—especially for students walking near nearby schools.

The intersections include Route 624 (Primmer House Road) at Riggs Road and Switchyard Court, Route 1706 (Plantation Drive) south of Smokehouse Drive, and Route 2350 (Woodcutters Road) at Millrace Road. These enhancements are part of a $392,000 project funded by state secondary road dollars, as prioritized by Stafford County’s Secondary Six Year Plan.

Federal Highway Administration research shows RRFBs can cut pedestrian crashes by nearly half, making them a proven tool for safer streets.
