WOODBRIDGE, Va. — A name synonymous with healthcare in Prince William County area for more than 40 years has changed.
Potomac Hospital is now called Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center. The new name was announced Monday morning.
“The decision to introduce a new hospital name was prompted by the many positive changes made at Potomac Hospital over the past two and a half years since joining Sentara Healthcare,” said Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center president Megan Perry in an email. “We believe that a new hospital name is symbolic and a celebration of all the hard work that has been undertaken by our physicians, staff and volunteers to improve the service and care we provide every day.”
The area’s level-one trauma centers remain Inova Faifax Hospital in Merrifield and Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg.
Sentara in 2009 purchased Potomac Hospital and put it into its profile of health centers and hospitals across the state. Last month, Sentara opened a new medical center in Lake Ridge that provides 24-hour emergency care – the first new medical center to open in eastern Prince William County since Potomac Hospital opened its doors in 1973.
