Romney Wins Va. Primary

UPDATE

Mitt Romney won Virginia’s Republican Primary Election with 59 percent of the vote. His only contender in the state, Ron Paul, walked away with 40 percent of the vote.

A lackluster election, about five percent of registered voters in the state turned out for the Primary. Contenders Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich failed to make it onto this year’s ballot and write in candidates were not permitted.

Romney also won Prince William and Stafford counties with 60 percent of the vote in each of the respective jurisdictions, according to the Virginia State Board of Elections.

STAFFORD, Va. — Chalk one up for Mitt Romney who won the Virginia Republican Primary on Tuesday.

The Associated Press called the race for Romney about 7:25 p.m., 30 minutes after polls closed in the state.

Voter turnout across the state was low as only Romney and Ron Paul appeared on the ballots, which left off GOP contenders Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich. Write in candidates were not allowed.

Virginia was one of 10 states that held Primary Elections today, and political observers said this could be the busiest day for the GOP in the race for the White House leading up to the General Election in the fall.

At 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, about 60 percent of the vote in Stafford County went for Romney with voter turnout that topped just over four percent. Prince William County had yet to report poll data.

Romney was elected Massachusetts Governor in 2002 and unsuccessfully sought the GOP presidential nomination in 2008, which went to John McCain.
