Transit Operator, Union Reach Deal

Woodbridge, Va. — It appears a strike that would have grounded transit buses in Prince William County has been averted.

Officials at the Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission announced late Friday afternoon that its contracted operator, First Transit, Inc., had reached a new tentative agreement with its union, American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees or AFSCME.

The new agreement comes after weeks of negotiations, and it could be ratified during a union vote between 10 a.m. and noon Saturday. The current labor agreement was set to expire at midnight Friday.

“While ratification is still awaited, PRTC congratulates the negotiators for reaching this tentative accord,” stated PRTC in a press release.

If an agreement had not been reached PRTC officials were bracing what impacts a strike would have on Saturday local OmniLink bus service which operates between 7:30 a.m. and 10:30 p.m.

OmniLink local and OmniRide commuter buses serve Prince William, Manassas and Manassas Park.
