OCCOQUAN — Karen Boyd will seek the Occoquan District School Board seat.
Boyd says she’s running for the seat because she believes the school system deserves dedicated public servants who will work for the community and make decisions that benefit all students.
Boyd wants to be a responsible steward of the tax dollar, make data-driven decisions that will be successful for all involved and communicate effectively with the community to gather input for the decision making process.
“I know that I will view every decision through the lenses of a community member, an educator, and a mom. I will ask, “How would this decision affect my child? What would my neighbor say of this decision? How might this decision impact the Occoquan District?” said Boyd.
She’ll challenge incumbent Lilly Jessie for the seat. School Board seats are non-partisan.
Jessie has had prior support from Democrats in the county. Prince William Republican Committee Chairman Bill Card says his party will endorse candidates after a June 11 Primary Election.
Boyd did win the endorsement of sitting Prince William County Occoquan District Supervisor Ruth Anderson.
”Karen is passionate about making sure our students get the best educational experience possible and that our teachers are supported in their professional endeavors. I look forward to working with her for the betterment of the community”, said Anderson.
Boyd has also been endorsed by Coles District School Board representative Willie Deutsch who has served on the School Board since 2016.
Boyd was born and raised in a town just north of Pittsburgh and has lived in Lake Ridge for the past 19 years. Karen and Mark, her husband of 25 years, raised two sons in Prince William County with them attending public schools.
Boyd is a graduate of Clarion University with a B.S. in Secondary Education and UVA with a Masters in Educational Leadership. Boyd has been in the field of education for 22 years, serving in various roles in Fairfax County Public Schools including as an English teacher and now an administrator at Mt. Vernon High School.
All of the seats on the Prince William County School Board are up for grabs this year. Voters will head to the polls Tuesday, Nov. 5.
