Wider 610 Now Open

A portion of Va. 610 in North Stafford, between Furnace and Joshua roads, was widened from two to four lanes.

North Stafford, Va. –– A wider Va. 610 in North Stafford is open to drivers.

While the wider road has been open to traffic for more than a week, the Virginia Department of Transportation heralded the completion of the project that widened the road from two to four lanes allowing it to carry more traffic.

The project also changed the configuration of some of the lanes as well as access to surrounding neighborhoods. A large median, new turn lanes and a traffic signal were also added as part of the project, said VDOT spokeswoman Kelly Hannon.

The half-mile stretch of road between Furnace and Joshua roads

carries 15,000 cars per day, according to 2009 VDOT study. By 2031, it’s expected to carry 32,000 cars per day.

While the speed limit for newly upgraded stretch of road was reduced during construction, it has been returned to 45 mph.

Another portion of Va. 610, between Eustace and Shelton Shop roads in North Stafford, was reduced from 45 to 40 mph in an effort to reduce crashes at traffic signals.
