Dumfries man pleads guilty in 2023 shooting that killed toddler, injured four others

A Dumfries man has pleaded guilty in connection with a 2023 shooting that left a 3-year-old child dead and four others — including three other children — seriously injured.

Kenyatta Oglesby, 23, entered a guilty plea on December 22, 2025, to one count of second-degree murder as part of a plea agreement for a 40-year prison term. He also pled guilty to four counts of aggravated malicious wounding, with sentencing still to be determined. Prince William County Commonwealth’s Attorney Amy Ashworth and Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Matthew Sweet are prosecuting the case. Sentencing is scheduled for May 21, 2026.

The charges stem from a January 4, 2023, incident at a townhouse community in Dumfries. According to police, Oglesby was involved in a domestic dispute with his then-girlfriend. After shooting her multiple times in a parking lot, he re-entered the home and shot four children in the basement, killing a 3-year-old and injuring three others. Oglesby fled the scene and was later apprehended by law enforcement.

Ashworth called the shooting “senseless and horrific,” saying it had “tragic yet predictable consequences.” She thanked law enforcement, first responders, and citizen witnesses who provided critical information that helped solve the case.
