Two women die after Manassas townhouse fire; smoke detectors credited with alerting residents

Two women rescued from a burning Manassas townhouse have died from their injuries, officials confirmed Monday.

Firefighters were dispatched at 1:37 p.m. to the 7900 block of Flager Circle, where heavy smoke was pouring from a three-story townhouse. Crews learned that two adult females were trapped on the second floor. Firefighters rushed inside, carried the victims down the stairs, and brought them outside for treatment. Both were transported to a nearby hospital but later died.

A third occupant suffered non-life-threatening injuries while trying to extinguish the fire and help rescue the trapped women. That person was also taken to a local medical facility for treatment.

The fire was determined to be accidental in nature. While the home sustained moderate damage, officials emphasized that working smoke detectors alerted the residents, giving them precious time to respond.

Fire officials urge all residents to regularly test their smoke detectors to ensure they are in working condition and ready to protect their families in case of emergency.
