George Stewart was sworn in as the new Gainesville District Supervisor during a ceremony on Friday, November 14, following the unexpected passing of Supervisor Bob Weir in July.
The event, held in Prince William County, drew several local and state officials, including Supervisors Tom Gordy, Kenny Bode, and Margaret Franklin, as well as State Senator Danica Roem (D). Clerk of the Court Jacqueline Smith administered the oath after Keith Scarborough, Chair of the Electoral Board, presented Stewart with his certificate of election.
Stewart, a Navy veteran who enlisted just two days after graduating high school, reflected on his life’s journey—including his adoption, reconnecting with his birth family, and the role civic engagement played throughout his upbringing.
“This is not an unusual space for me,” Stewart said, crediting his adoptive parents for instilling a strong sense of community service. He also acknowledged support from local political figures, including Delegate Josh Thomas (D) and Gainesville Democrats, who helped launch his campaign.
Calling on residents from across the political spectrum to stay engaged, Stewart emphasized his commitment to transparency and accountability. “I’m looking to raise an army… that want to have their voice heard,” he said. He noted the challenges facing the western part of Prince William County and promised to face them head-on, adding, “My willingness to lead is really a willingness to serve.”
The ceremony concluded with a reception, during which attendees were invited to meet Stewart in person. He encouraged community members to stay involved and hold him accountable as he begins his tenure on the Board of County Supervisors.
