A damaged gas line led to the evacuation of 82 residents from their Lake Ridge homes on Wednesday night. Crews responded just before 9:40 p.m. to the intersection of Oakwood Drive and Catania Place after a 3-inch natural gas pipe was struck during excavation work.

Due to the leak, residents from approximately 65 townhomes were taken to Woodbridge High School for temporary shelter. Most were able to return home or find other accommodations by midnight after Washington Gas secured the leak. However, 32 residents, including two children, required overnight shelter from the Red Cross due to continued loss of heat in their homes.

One person was evaluated at the scene for medical concerns but did not require further treatment. No serious injuries were reported.

Last evening at 9:39 PM units were dispatched to near the intersection of Oakwood Drive and Catania Place (Lake Ridge) for reports of a natural gas pipe being damaged and leaking. Crews determined it was a 3” gas line damaged by excavation work being conducted. The hazardous condition necessitated the evacuation of approximately 65 townhomes. A total of 82 residents were evacuated from their homes and transported to Woodbridge High School for temporary sheltering.

Hazardous Materials crews assisted with advanced monitoring capabilities and technical assistance. Washington Gas was able to secure the leak shortly after midnight.

Thirty (30) adults and 2 children of the 82 people who were initially sheltered at Woodbridge High School were further assisted by Fire and Rescue staff and the Red Cross for overnight sheltering due to loss of heat at their homes, where the gas could not be restored after the emergency repair. All others temporarily sheltered at Woodbridge High School were able to either return to their homes or provide for their own housing for the rest of the evening.

One (1) citizen was medically evaluated on the scene but did not require further medial assistance. No other injuries were reported.
