Fredericksburg’s popular Concert by Canoe series is set to return next week, bringing live music to the water at Motts Run Reservoir. The summer run kicks off Wednesday, August 20, with the Shim Dogs performing from 6 to 8 p.m.
Concert-goers can paddle out in their canoe or kayak, or rent one on-site, to enjoy an evening of live music surrounded by nature. Gates open at 5 p.m.
Callie Brown, superintendent of recreation for Fredericksburg Parks, Recreation, and Events, said this year’s series comes after a tough spring season when only one of four planned concerts went forward because of bad weather. “Our fingers are crossed that the weather cooperates for our end-of-summer series,” Brown said.
One new feature for 2025 is the option to pre-order $15 charcuterie boxes, prepared by Michelle’s Table, which include a drink and can be enjoyed on the water. Orders are due each Tuesday at 9 a.m. ahead of that week’s concert. Guests are also welcome to bring their own food and drinks.
The four-part series will run weekly through September 10, with a different band scheduled each Wednesday:
- August 20: Shim Dogs
- August 27: McHale & Justina
- September 3: Colonial Seafood
- September 10: ThePhipps
Attendance depends on the weather, Brown noted, but on a good night the event draws about 50 people, with room for more. “The great thing about a concert on the water is the sound carries so you can really spread out and still enjoy the music,” she said.
Brown added that the event ties directly into the department’s mission. “Our whole mission is about enhancing the lives of our community members. What’s better than relaxing on the water with someone you love while eating snacks and listening to music?”
