Big Beam Weekend: Drivers Urged to Avoid Northbound I-495 Near Tysons Starting Tonight

Traffic disruptions and lane reductions are set to begin on northbound I-495 (Capital Beltway Inner Loop) near Tysons, Virginia, as part of the 495 NEXT project’s Big Beam Weekend. The impacts will start tonight, Friday, January 24, at 9 p.m., and continue through 5 a.m. Monday, January 27. Motorists are strongly advised to avoid the area and plan alternate routes, as significant delays and backups are anticipated.

What to Expect

  • Northbound I-495 Traffic Diversion:
    • All traffic will be reduced to two lanes and diverted onto the northbound 495 Express Lanes north of Route 123.
    • Vehicles will not be charged tolls, and trucks will be permitted on this section of the Express Lanes, which will temporarily operate as general-purpose lanes.
    • All lanes (four general-purpose lanes) will reopen north of the Dulles Toll Road/Route 267 at Lewinsville Road.
  • Changes for Express Lanes Drivers:
    • Traffic on the northbound 495 Express Lanes will exit at the Route 7/Leesburg Pike exit, with the option to merge back into the general-purpose lanes of northbound I-495.
  • Ramp Closures and Detours:
    • The ramp from eastbound Dulles Toll Road/Dulles Airport Access Highway to northbound I-495 will be closed.
    • Westbound Dulles Toll Road under I-495 will also be closed, while the Dulles Airport Access Highway will remain open throughout the weekend.
  • Southbound I-495:
    • All southbound I-495 lanes, including the Express Lanes, will remain open. Tolling will continue as normal for southbound Express Lanes traffic.

Plan Ahead

Drivers are encouraged to avoid northbound I-495 near Tysons during this time and explore alternative routes to minimize delays. The closures and lane reductions are necessary to facilitate construction work for the 495 NEXT project, aimed at improving infrastructure in the region.
