Police have stepped up speeding enforcement on Cardinal Drive in Woodbridge after a woman was struck and killed while walking her dog.
The victim, Deborah Lynn Talbot, 50, was struck on Friday, May 1 while walking near Swan Avenue. Days earlier, she sent a message to the Prince William police department noting the problem of speeding on Cardinal Drive, and when police were going to step-up enforcement, WRC-TV reports.
The incident has now captured the attention of multiple members of the Prince William Board of County Supervisors.
“Speeding has been a continued problem on Cardinal Drive… it’s evident that current [enforcement] practices are not enough,” said Neabsco District Supervisor Victor Angry.
Angry admitted he driven over the posted 45 mph speed limit on Cardinal Drive on occasion. Talbot’s death, however, has made him think twice about speeding, he said, as he called attention to the problem of speeding also taking place on other nearby roads like Smoketown and Minnieville roads as well as Dale Boulevard, he said.
“I’m so sorry to hear about that,” Brentsville District Supervisor Jeanine Lawson said to Angry.
She recalled an effort by the county police department about two years ago, where officers worked with videographers to produce a series of videos that aired on the county’s cable TV channel urging them not to speed.
“Perhaps this tragedy in your district could bring this conversation back to the surface,” she added.
Supervisors asked Prince William County Executive Christopher Martino to come back with a series of recommendations for the Board of County Supervisors to consider in an effort to get people to slow down on area roads.
