UMW Theatre will continue its 2019-20 season with Fun Home, music by Jeanine Tesori, book and lyrics by Lisa Kron, and based on the graphic memoir by Alison Bechdel.
- This musical follows cartoonist Alison Bechdel through critical events of her life.
In an attempt to untangle her past, Alison reflects on her childhood, coming out as a lesbian, and her relationship with her father, Bruce.
- Memories of the Bechdel family at their business and Alison’s journey into adulthood guide her through her father’s unexpected death.
Alison Bechdel published her graphic novel Fun Home in 2006, which served as inspiration for the creation of a musical adaptation.
- This musical was workshopped, performed as a staged reading, and adapted over five years, making its off-Broadway debut in 2013.
- It has since won numerous awards including Tony Awards, the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Musical.
Fun Home is directed by Gregg Stull, professor and chair of the Department of Theatre & Dance with musical direction by David Landrum and choreography by Samantha L. Reynolds.
- Scenic design is by assistant professor Bridgette Dennett and costume design is by associate professor Kevin McCluskey.
- Lighting and sound designs are by guest designers Jason Arnold and Tony Angelini, respectively.
