QUANTICO – (Press Release) On February 23 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. the National Museum of the Marine Corps hosts the second annual “Heroes Among Us” event for active duty military, veterans and their family members.
Motivational speakers and representatives from service organizations, both private and government, will be on hand to provide information about benefits, military-to-civilian transition programs, warrior care, education assistance, support-through-sports events, and family assistance programs.
Medal of Honor recipient and Hiring Our Heroes Ambassador, U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Dakota Meyer will speak in the Medal of Honor Theater at 11:30 a.m. about his life experiences and his passion for preparing young service members and veterans for life after military service.
Seating is limited. Visitors can reserve their seat through Eventbrite. The action-packed, giant screen adventure “We, the Marines” can be seen in the Medal of Honor Theater following Meyer’s presentation.
Throughout the day in Leatherneck Gallery, Chef Andre Rush (retired U.S. Army master sergeant) will challenge visitors to stay motivated in life and physically fit. Chef Rush is an advocate for military service and suicide prevention. Visitors will be challenged to drop to the floor and join him in his commitment of doing 2,222 push-ups a day for veterans’ suicide awareness.
U.S. Navy Captain Maurice Buford will be sharing tips on Spiritual Fitness in Scuttlebutt Theater at 2:00 p.m. Chaplain Buford’s topic will include the history of service members’ faith in battle and spiritual fitness.
During the event, visitors can tour behind the scenes at the Museum and see Final Phase galleries taking shape. The Museum’s recently installed 9/11 artifacts will be available for viewing.
A yoga class and service dog demonstrations round out the day’s offerings. This will also be one of the last opportunities for visitors to see “A World at War: The Marine Corps and U.S. Navy in World War I” in the Marine Corps Combat Art Gallery. The show, which commemorates the 100th Anniversary of America’s involvement in World War I, closes on April 1 in preparation for a show featuring military working dog sculptures. The new exhibit opens June 2019.
