Phyllis Ann Smith of Ashburn, Virginia (The Wingler House) died peacefully, surrounded by family, on August 24, 2017 at The Adler Center for Caring (Hospice) in Aldie, VA.
Phyllis was born May 26, 1932, in Alexandria, VA to the late Charles B. and Capitola Jenkins. Phyllis attended Nursing School in Alexandria, Virginia and later became the Director of Nursing for The Goodwin House, Commonwealth Nursing Home and The Virginian.
She is survived by her sister, Barbara (Bobbie) Henry (Tom); one son, Francis C. Hammond, Jr. (Gloria); two daughters, Cheryl Reingruber (George) and Debra Lawlor (Kevin); 6 grandchildren, Jessica, Meghan, Ethan, Katie, Tommy and Austin; 4 Great grandchildren: Brandon, Jordan, and Seth; and the newest addition to our family her Great-great grandson Noah. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Francis C. Hammond, Sr. (Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, Korean War) and her second husband, Howard H. Smith (World War II veteran), her sister Betty Jane (Jenkins) Snapp and her brother, Charles B. Jenkins, Jr.
Her family and especially her grandchildren children were her life and legacy. She instilled a strong sense of family in all of us.
Her wishes were for no funeral services. There will be a Celebration of Life planned on her birthday May 26, 2018.
Memorial contributions may take the form of donations to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959.
